How Do I Know If I Suffered Whiplash After A Car Accident?

whiplash car accidentAre you concerned that you may have suffered whiplash in a car accident? A car accident can happen at almost any time. Even though you are probably very careful, making sure you always wear your seatbelt, stay under the speed limit, and take care of your car, other drivers are not the same. If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident, your neck can snap from side to side or back and forth very quickly. This leads to whiplash, which is a sprain/strain injury of the cervical ligaments in your neck. What are some of the signs that you may have suffered whiplash? Keep reading to learn more and remember that a chiropractor can help you address this concern.

Neck Stiffness and Soreness

One of the most common symptoms of whiplash is neck stiffness. Your ligaments are responsible for allowing your bones to move back and forth and side to side. If you have a sprain of the cervical ligaments in your neck, you might not be able to move your neck as much as you should.

For example, you might have a hard time turning your head from side to side. Or, you may have a difficult time moving your head up and down. Regardless, neck stiffness is one of the most common symptoms of whiplash. If you try to turn your head too far to one side, you could feel pain traveling from your neck down your back and into your head.

Recurring Headaches

Because your neck’s ligaments and tendons might be a bit stiff and sore, other parts of your body will have to compensate. For example, you might have to use the muscles in your head and scalp more than you’re used to. As a result, these muscles could start to get tired. This could contribute to the development of recurring headaches. For example, you might feel like there is a vice around your head, particularly in the evenings. This pain could make it difficult for you to concentrate. The best way to deal with this issue is to give your neck muscles and ligaments time to recover. That way, muscles throughout the rest of your body will not have to work as hard.

Difficulty With Everyday Tasks

Finally, you might also experience difficulty with everyday tasks. You may not realize just how often you use the muscles and ligaments in your neck. For example, you may have a difficult time looking at your phone because you have pain when you look down. Or, you may have a difficult time driving a car because you have a hard time looking both ways before you pull your car out. You might also have a difficult time reading a book because your neck gets sore when you look down at the pages. If you have a difficult time completing everyday tasks, you might suffer from whiplash.

Reach Out to a Chiropractor for Help

These are just a few of the many signs and symptoms that could indicate that you have suffered whiplash. Fortunately, this is not something that you need to go through on your own. A chiropractor can help you. After a motor vehicle accident, you should schedule an appointment with the chiropractor for a complete physical exam. A chiropractor can take a look at your neck, see if it is out of alignment, and perform adjustments to put your vertebrae back into the proper locations. This could release any ligaments or tendons that were trapped following the accident. As a result, you could feel your range of motion improve, expediting the recovery process.
